Chapter 6:
Good and Evil
THE MOMENT I SET FOOT in the classroom the next morning, many pairs of eyes fell on me all at once. But those students quickly looked away from me, in all directions. Then several gazes fell upon me once again, from all over the room. This process began to repeat itself, over and over again.
I was going to be expelled. The reality was that they had already begun taking action to get me expelled. This was precisely what I had sensed just yesterdayâthe feeling that something was out of place.
Akito, Keisei, and the rest of the Ayanokouji Group seemed no different today, though. The four of them werenât such incredibly gifted actors that I wouldnât be able to notice anything out of place about them. Since they were in the same group as me, I was sure the mastermind had naturally made sure no information was leaked to them. Of course, I didnât intend to make the four of them worry about me. If I carelessly let something slip, then Keiâs involvement in my situation could be brought to light. I had no choice but to deal with this myself.
âGood morning, Ayanokouji-kun.â
âOh. Morning.â
Horikita, who had just arrived, didnât seem to notice anything either.
âSup.â
Apparently, Sudou must have tagged along with her, since his greeting came at almost the exact same time.
âJust so you are aware, this is a coincidence,â said Horikita.
âI didnât ask,â I replied.
For some reason, Sudou had his nose in the air, looking proud as he headed toward his seat. He probably had nothing to do with my current situation. Sure, he might want me expelled, but if he did go along with what Yamauchi was planning, then it would greatly impact Horikitaâs opinion of him. Besides, he wasnât a skilled enough actor to put up a good poker face.
ââ¦By the way,â said Horikita in a quiet voice, once it was just the two of us.
âWhat?â
âWhat did you do?â she asked.
âIs it just me, or am I missing something? Can you explain whatever it is youâre talking about?â
âRegarding me. What did you do?â she asked.
That was a rather abstract question.
âI donât know what youâre trying to say, but Iâm not doing anything. I donât exactly have enough free time to worry about you.â
âYou donât have the time to worry about me? What do you mean?â she replied.
âLook, donât worry about it,â I told her.
Class was just about to begin. Considering how Horikita was acting, she probably hadnât gotten in touch with her brother yet. It seemed like the action was going to happen this afternoon.
